Our Philosphy of Care

The relationship between the nurse and the resident is both a professional and a personal one. Nursing care is at its best when it is tailored specifically to meet the needs and personality of the individual resident.

For this to happen, we have to really get to know each unique individual. We aim for excellence and to show love and kindness to our residents and hope that Downs Cottage will feel like their home.

The ultimate aim is to provide nursing care and to encourage each individual to maintain optimum independence and quality of life.

Treating Residents as Individuals

At Downs Cottage we provide nursing care in a friendly, homely atmosphere where the privacy, enjoyment and convenience of our residents is always our priority.

The emphasis is on offering everyone an improved quality of life combined with the highest possible standards of 24-hour care provided by dedicated, trained staff.

You will benefit from a personalised care plan: excellent food, a regular activities and entertainment programme; social outings and the convenience of having services such as hairdressing, chiropody and physiotherapy visiting on site.

Carers will strive to preserve and maintain the dignity, individuality and privacy of all service users within a warm and caring atmosphere, and in so doing will be sensitive to the service users’ ever-changing needs. Such needs may be medical/therapeutic (for physical and mental welfare), cultural, psychological, spiritual, emotional and social, and service users are encouraged to participate in the development of their individualised Care Plans in which the involvement of family and friends may be appropriate and is greatly valued.

This will be achieved through programmes of activities designed to encourage mental alertness, self-esteem, and social interaction with other service users and with recognition of the following core values of care, which are fundamental to the philosophy of our Home:

CORE VALUES OF CARE

PRIVACY

DIGNITY

FULFILMENT

All Care Staff within the Home will be appropriately qualified to deliver the highest standards of care. A continuous staff-training programme is implemented to ensure that these high standards are maintained in line with the latest developments in Care Practices as may be laid down in appropriate Legislation, Regulations and the Commission for Social Care Inspection. We have over 80% of our care staff with Level 2 NVQ.

Quality Assurance

We are committed to meeting and exceeding standards set by the regulatory body the CSCI. This includes a robust quality assurance system to ensure we listen to views of all persons included in our service, development of our staff, with continual evaluation and training, a complaints procedure and feedback from external stakeholders and next of kin.
